Indian Lake Saugeye Fishing

I've targeted saugeye on my last couple trips to Indian lake but I have yet to catch a single one and not for lack of trying

I'm probably not fishing for them correctly so I turn to you fellas for any tips you might have from your personal experience fishing Indian lake for saugeye or just saugeye anywhere

I tried what the locals recommended which was a green paddle tail on a 1/8th jighead. I swam it through the water not making any bottom contact so I was thinking that might be where I was messing up but I'll take any advice!!

Bottom, bottom, bottom……!
If you’re not losing jigs, you’re not catching Saugeye! Just my 2 cents!
Don’t overlook live bait, crawlers and med/minnows on bottom……!

awesome good advise from Rods Bottom !!!! with live bait I have caught more saugeye with Minnow then anything else some real hogs

the already posted advice is spot on… Keep it on the bottom… nightcrawlers or bass size minnows tight lined on the bottom.... Especially at indian… If you wanna throw a jig… I would do it first thing in the morning or the last thing in the evening

What kind of weight do you guys use when you use nightcrawlers? I thinking about trying to thread a nightcrawler on a jig

And with using minnows do you just use a split shot to keep him on the bottom?

I mainly use a Carolina Rig when tight lining live bait.
Weight depends on winds and waves.
I use anywhere from 3/16 to 3/8 oz normally!
Bump your bait in every few minutes, a lot of strikes come right after moving your bait!
Oh, stock up on sinkers, swivels and hooks.
You’re gonna lose a lot of these rigs too!

one of my best days was leaches and jigs limit was 10 ea 20 in 1,5 hours dream bridge in the fall jig with a twister and a leach, pink,,,no one else except the tooners on the lake

I've wondered about leaches there. Bank fishing from Pew one evening last year, the rocks were FULL of small leaches swimming around

The paddle tails will work in most lakes but as stated keep them just off the bottom. I like to reel them up at a medium speed and stop and let them fall to the bottom. They will hit on the fall or soon as you move it on the bottom. Erly spring in shallow water a a steady retrieve works but from now on slow it up and work the bottom

1/4 to 3/8 weights you got some good advise from some of the best I too move my bait depending on their mood, sometimes a quick flick or slow and deliberate move will trigger strikes and as Rods said plenty of hooks, swivels, sinkers

I'm getting old LOL Tom mentioned a Bait that I failed to mention that worked good at times Leeches let us know how you do and don't forget the Hooks and sinkers

Are the weeds not too bad at Indian right now? Or is it more of, expect to reel in either weeds or a fish on each cast, lol?

The weeds are almost gone on the main lake. Indian had a huge shad spawn but using nightcrawlers on the bottom is still working. You might try trolling a crankbait, you can cover more water and hopefully find a school of saugeye.

I heard a bass tournament on Indian yesterday it took only 13 lbs. to win. They said the bite was tough. The relayed message I got from a friend was they caught only 5 legal bass all day.

Was there on Saturday August 24th, trolling flicker shads and picked up a fat 23 incher. We lost another smaller eye at the boat. Both hit a purple tiger flicker shad size 5. Trolling would be the way to go for at least another couple weeks I would say.

Summer fish probably prefer a horizontal presentation, early/ mid spring and fall they will be more likely to take vertical presentations. Unless they don't read the magazines...

Just got back from my Indian lake trip this morning and the bite was super tough for me the first couple days. Nothing but some pretty big bluegill and a single perch

But yesterday and this morning the catfish started biting and I picked up 3 nice sized blue cats and a decent channel. And while I was waiting for a catfish bite I was throwing minnows for crappie and doing okay, probably got about a dozen.

However still haven't gotten one saugeye out of Indian lake )': I got a nice bite one night at 1 am on a paddletail but it was about a 2 pound bass instead of a saugeye, I won't complain about that though!
