Spent the past week 8/10-8/17 in northern ontario at Horseshoe Island Camp with my wife's cousins Austin and Chad. We had very warm temps with bright sunshine for nearly the whole week. Highs were in the mid to upper 80's all week except Friday and Saturday. The fishing didn't disappoint either. We trolled up plenty of walleye to eat several fish fry dinners. The smallmouth weren't as active this year but we did manage several nice smallies on topwater. Of course the pike were everywhere we fished as well.

I must've accumulated some good karma in the past year because I managed to catch the first brook trout the camp had seen come out of the lake. The ministry doesn't stock them in Mistinikon Lake so it must've washed in from heavy rains. I also managed to catch a giant walleye for this time of year in northeastern ontario, around 31" and between 11 and 12 lbs on the spring scale the camp had. Our digital scale took a dump sometime during the trip, figures. The walleye had a girth of nearly 17" behind the pectoral fins and the head was gigantic compared to an Erie walleye!

Walleyes were caught trolling 2.4 to 2.7 mph with hot n tots, dipsies with spoons and flicker shad on leadcore. We tried vertical fishing but we did way better trolling and covering water. Most fish we caught were down 18 to 23 ft anywhere from 20 to 30 fow.

We were also treated to a northern lights show a couple nights. Certainly a trip of a lifetime and one I'll never forget!

Great fishing! I've been there a few times and also had good fishing, but you had extraordinary catches. Sounds like you trolled deeper water near the dam. Did you get to the chutes at the top of the lake?

Most of our smallmouth came up near the chutes. We spent most of our time at that end of the lake. The big girl came from that end of the lake. We also fished alot around bell island since that is where the camp is. Seemed like just about everywhere we trolled with points that dropped off into deep water held walleyes.

We used to go to Christies Camp back in the day when Hughie ran it. Sad to see it completely gone now! But the cabins and hospitality from the Horseshoe Island are top notch. No electricity, but running water and gas fridges/stoves. Hoping to get back up often as I get closer to retirement years.

Looks like an outstanding trip, haven’t been up that way in years and really miss the unparalleled fishing up there. The trout looks a bit more like a Splake than a Brook Trout, did they say anything about Splake at their camp? Makes no difference either way, it’s a beautiful fish, as is the beast Walleye, hats off.

Kind of thought the same for the trout. Still a nice fish!

Thanks for your report. I was up there in July 2023 for the first time and we did ok. Used mostly live bait with harnesses and jigs for walleye and fished mainly around the big island down to the bridge. We did venture to the chutes one day for SM and had a blast (except when we hit a rock, thankfully no damage). Would definitely like to return and try early June or Sept. I think that might be better for our style of fishing. Hopefully they are planning to be open again as a fire completely burned down the main lodge a couple months ago
