Spent the past week 8/10-8/17 in northern ontario at Horseshoe Island Camp with my wife's cousins Austin and Chad. We had very warm temps with bright sunshine for nearly the whole week. Highs were in the mid to upper 80's all week except Friday and Saturday. The fishing didn't disappoint either. We trolled up plenty of walleye to eat several fish fry dinners. The smallmouth weren't as active this year but we did manage several nice smallies on topwater. Of course the pike were everywhere we fished as well.
I must've accumulated some good karma in the past year because I managed to catch the first brook trout the camp had seen come out of the lake. The ministry doesn't stock them in Mistinikon Lake so it must've washed in from heavy rains. I also managed to catch a giant walleye for this time of year in northeastern ontario, around 31" and between 11 and 12 lbs on the spring scale the camp had. Our digital scale took a dump sometime during the trip, figures. The walleye had a girth of nearly 17" behind the pectoral fins and the head was gigantic compared to an Erie walleye!
Walleyes were caught trolling 2.4 to 2.7 mph with hot n tots, dipsies with spoons and flicker shad on leadcore. We tried vertical fishing but we did way better trolling and covering water. Most fish we caught were down 18 to 23 ft anywhere from 20 to 30 fow.
We were also treated to a northern lights show a couple nights. Certainly a trip of a lifetime and one I'll never forget!
