A 5 will troll you at summer speeds, but that is about all. If you also want to be able to get in if your main engine fails, you better get a little bigger one. Imho
If you troll for salmon or striper also then you will need a 9.9 or bigger. That 5 will do what you need it to but you will be at high rpm's trying to push that wellcraft.
A kicker motor will not push a boat faster than hull speed as it likely does not have the power to push the boat up on plane. However, more hp will enable it to push the boat at hull speed in rougher water and work easier at trolling speeds.
9.9 is best compromise. If you are intending to fish late fall & early spring you will not be able to troll down to 1 mph with a 15 or 20 hp. And as has been said, unless you can get up on plane you are not going more than about 7 mph no matter the HP of your kicker.
I wish I could find a used 9.9 yami w/power tilt (preferably remote controls) for less than the price of new!!
Should have never left the one I had hooked up to a tr-1 autopilot on my old boat![emoji20] I miss that setup a lot!!!
Detweiler outboards in Middlefield, he is authorized Suzuki dealer, great guy, I also trade-in my old Mercury kicker there.
