Read a couple articles debating fishing upstream vs. downstream and the techniques used in each. Any preferences?

truly whichever is more convenient and gives you confidence, you should go by it. sometimes i cast directly upstream and take in the line, sometimes down and across, it depends on the situation. learn both ways

It depends on what you are fishing for and what you are fishing with.

Dry fly ?

Nymph ?

streamer ?

egg pattern ?

For dries I like across stream and up, streamers I fish down stream and across, and nymphs I fish whichever way will help me catch fish :-D

For anything that drifts, upstream or somethin close. Anything I'm moving, down stream is fine. That's my gig anyhoo.

same here as clayton, usually up and across for dries and nymphs and down and across for streamers. but if the flow is not moving i will sometimes cast streamers directly across river and strip um in straight across too. have caught lots of bass that way cause the flows are always very very low in the summer.
