What are carp doing?

Discussion in 'Northwest Ohio Fishing Reports' started by Corkster, Jun 2, 2007.

  1. Put the kayak in at Towpath boat ramp on the Maumee this morning, paddled and fished for the next 4 hours and caught nothing. There was one spot on the East side where there were a number of carp (must have seen 50 or so in all) with there mouths just barely out of the water and looked like they were just gulping air. The fish were vertical with just their gulping yellow mouths out of the water.Heck, one was just right off the bow and I almost was able to drop my spinner off the end of my pole into his mouth. What are they doing?

Probably eating cottonwood puff off the surface..

  3. That would be my guess, I have also see them eating mullberries as fast as they hit the water.

...coming up for air, after all the screwin' they've been doin'.

  5. I have only seen this 2 times 1 was in the fall when the sun was setting and one was during a storm. I can only think that they were skimming the surface for bugs, alge, or some other type of food.
