Ohio man dies in canoe accident

An Ohio man drowned Sunday evening in a canoe accident within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Ronald Davidson, 59, of Amelia, Ohio, and another man were paddling between Newton and Fall lakes about 8 p.m. when a strong current capsized their canoe, Lake County Sheriff Steve Peterson said.

Peterson said Davidson and his unidentified companion were able to put on life jackets. But while one man could swim to shore, Davidson couldn't make it.

The companion later pulled an unconscious Davidson from the water and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but to no avail.

The survivor also managed to call for help about an hour after the accident, but Davidson died before the Lake County Sheriff's Department Rescue Squad could get him out of the BWCAW and to a hospital.

Peterson said an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

  2. My dad and brothers just got back from up there and my dad and youngest bro got dumped in the middle of the lake while trying to make it back to camp. They were in the 47 degree water for about 30 minutes before they made it to shore. They built a fire and got warmed up but it was still a close call. Be carefull on the water.
