Volvo engine/outdrive opinions

  1. Looking at an '01 Sportcraft w/ 4.3L Volvo.
    Any positive or negative experiences on reliability,service, performance on this engine and outdrive ?

    A friend has one on his crestliner sportfish, not one problem he loves it.

    Volvo out drives are the best, so I've been told. I have a mercruiser. Either way, you need to maintain them properly. Get a manual and follow maintenance procedures yearly. If you keep putting it off, the drive will no doubt, put you off. Pretty much rebuilt mine this year, not easy. As papascott says, repairs can be quite pricey! I about choked when I heard what they wanted to repair mine. Bought the parts and did it myself. But I am a mechanically inclined kinda a guy. Average joe probably has no chance of repairing an out drive.

    It's a Chevy block engine. VP outdrive is considered the best. Parts are pricey but if the unit is properly maintained there shouldn't be any issues.

    Never worked on one til the wife's boat.
    They are the best! Easier to work on than a Mercruiser, in my opinion.
    Built a whole lot better too.

    Whaddya goin' to do?
    Found a girl that likes to fish as much as me, with two boats,
    a 22' Tiara and a 26ft Wellcraft w/ twin350's.
    Got married 8/8/08!
