What language and version of Visual Studio are you writing in? (C++, VB, version 4/5/6/.Net/2K3/Whidbey)? Almost sound like you may have a sub main either improperly defined or scoped or you may want to check your project properties for the program startup object and make sure it exists. Sometimes that setting can get out of whack when your deleting objects and writing your own to the wizard generated code.

The project settings are defined on a per project basis. Do you have a sub main? I just did a quick test by creating an empty C++ project added a CPP file to it and wrote this code and got a clean compile without changing any settings:

main ()
{

return;

}
