vhf walkie talkie

Discussion in 'Tackle Talk' started by ohiojmj, Jun 8, 2004.

  1. I need one walkie talkie that can communicate with my permanently mounted VHF boat radio. What kinds work? Those FMRS? I got a cheapo pair of 3 mile range walkie talkies and they don't. Going to Canada, need a vhf walkie talkie for base camp to keep in touch with my teen boys as they sleep the first 1/2 of the day while i troll out front.

FMRS operates on a completely different frequency than Marine/VHF. You will need a specific VHF walkie talkie. They run around $80-$300, I believe. The Unidens appear to be the least expensive.

Here is a list of several models with links to retail sites:

Don't forget that VHF is only "Line of Sight" so if there is an obstruction between you and the boys, you won't be able to communicate.

  3. Thanks wormdrowner, maybe i'll just make do with my cheapo 3 mile walkie talkies that don't leap buildings in a single bound, but do go over small hills.

  4. FYI. I do not believe it is permitted to take two way radios into Canada. Can anyone confirm this?
