Yes they will work. Keep in mind that the Western Basin is far shallower overall than the Central Basin area you are talking about. You will want to add bottom bouncer techniques to your attack as well as the casting that you will be doing. I see a lot of folks out there drifting and casting. Every once in a while I like to go old school and leave the trolling gear in the garage and drift and cast myself.

My only experience with drifting comes from the Canada border lines by the islands. However, I am currently jigging in Vermilion area and normally fish from Cleveland to Vermilion area. WILL DRIFTING and CASTING techniques perform in these areas the same as they do to the west? I would much rather stick to home waters and catch a few less fish in my own back yard.

Drift & Cast sure they will work in your area-I would fish that Ruggles area. Find that structure there and work itI am trying to plan forward when the jig bite fades away. Agreed, drifting does work East of the islands. Keys -1) the shallower water the fish are in the better. It is much easier to get and stay "in the zone" in 30 fow than it is in 50. 2) must have a drift - odds reduce when you are bobbing on a flat lake, 3) if/when you aren't catching &/the trollers are - do your best to get in the zone that they are fishing (may be high fish and you are under them with typical drift techniques)
Early on the year, this means fairly shallow and possibly in the snaggy structure. Later this is the sand bar. Post storm/ weather fronts can have the typical high fish trollers perplexed while drifters easily catch fish that are glued to the bottom.
