Trailering sway ????

Discussion in 'Boats and Motors' started by exexec, Apr 18, 2005.

  1. I drive a jeep grand cherokee, pulling a 20 ft Aquasport. When I get above 50 mph the boat begins to sway. I have pulled it with pickup truck and don't get any sway at all. Is there anything I can do to minimize or even eliminate it short of buying a pickup? more/less tongue wt? sway bars?.....????

  2. make sure the tongue wait is enough, check air in all tires. i have pulled a little lighter boat with my grand cherokee with no problem.

The tongue weight should be 10% of the overall weight of the boat/trailer.

You probably will have to adjust the trailer so the boat sets further back, or sets forward a little more (depending on what the tongue weight is now)
  4. I had a similar problem and it was caused by the tires on my van. I had Uniroyal Tigerpaws. When I went to a tire with a stiffer sidewall the problem went away.
