On April 27, 1971 the Grateful Dead surprised everyone when they welcomed The Beach Boys on-stage in the middle of a five night stand at The Fillmore East, New York. The classic Dead lineup was in great shape. The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson had already taken off on his own, and Dennis was off due to a hand injury. I don't think there is any video footage of the show. If you know of any, please share ;). The audio has been released numerous times. Link at end of post is to the archive.org site with 16,000+ live Dead recordings from 1965-1995.....

Sadly, on this date in 1980 bassist Tommy Caldwell passed away from injuries sustained when he clipped a parked car and rolled his Land Cruiser a week earlier. He was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on November 9, 1949. Started playing with his older brother, Toy, before they were 10 years old. First as "The Toy Factory", and then in 1972 as "The Marshall Tucker Band". Youngest Caldwell boy Tim, also died in a car accident just a month prior to Tommy's accident at 25 years old. The original line up pretty much called it quits a few years later. The namesake of the band, a blind piano tuner Mr. Marshall Tucker, was still going strong in his late 90's as of late 2021.....cool interview with Mr. Tucker here.... Meet Marshall Tucker. YES, that Marshall Tucker!

Happy 89th to Willie Hugh Nelson! He was born on this date (looking back now...he was 9 days late ;)) in Abbott, Texas. Tough to pick a few tunes from somebody who has written 300+ and appeared on over 250 albums. Florida Highway Patrol recently pulled his weed over and discovered a bus. Some great clips of Willie and Snoop on youtube..NSFOGF

Today is the 74th birthday of guitarist, vocalist and former Federal prisoner, Wayne Kramer. Born in Detroit, he was a founding member of MC5 (late 60's-'72). The original lineup only lasted a few years, with three albums. Pure kick ass rock and roll, with a bit of early punk? They never seem to have gotten the widespread recognition they deserved.

Another milestone date in Detroit (American) music history. Bob Seger was born in 1945. Started playing on Detroit local radio as far back as '61. Late 60's to early 70's it was Bob Seger and the Last Heard, and then the Bob Seger System. In 1973 it became Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.

So does your truck identify as a car now? Or did they do the El Camino thing where it looks like a car but still has a truck bed?
