Speed change?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by TheKing, Feb 8, 2005.

  1. I am noticing slower performance here. A lot slower. What can I check to see if something is wrong.
  2. noticing the same thing myself, thought it was just me

The winter months have brought more traffic to OGF, that much is certain. Various things can impact overall site performance. Number of people on-line, searches, etc.. all impact server resources.

Rest assured the site is monitored 24x7 for availability, and that our tech team continues to work on making improvements to overall server health. We have been considering an upgrade to a faster CPU and more memory for quite some time, and will make that move as soon as it is fiscally feasable.

In the meantime, please make sure the issue is not with your ISP. When you encounter what you consider to be performance issues, do a simple traceroute to and post the results here.

i just got faster with my new Road runner so i cant tell YET
  7. I did a few things on my update, adware scans, virus scans. As near as I can tell, mine is back to the previous speeds.

captnroger: For future reference, how do we perform the traceroute that you suggested?
  8. TheKing,

The traceroute is done at the command line. To ge to the command line click the "Start" then "Run". Then type "cmd" and press enter. This should get you a dark screen with a prompt line to type on. If this by chance does not get you there you should be able to get there as well by clicking the "Start" and finding it either in "Programs" or "Accessories". Through this way you should be looking for something that says, "Command Prompt".

Once at the command line type in, "traceroute" and press enter. The string of responses following are what the Captain would be interested in knowing. These lines tell you whether your PC is able to get to the desired location, what servers it goes through and response times.

I did what you stated to do and I received the following response.....
It is not recognized as an internel or external command, operable program or batch file.
So what do I try next?
  10. Well for starters I typed the command wrong. What I meant to say was type the following, "tracert". Hopefully that is the only thing I left out.:D
  11. If it works correctly this process can take a bit of time for the trace to finish. And you may be surprised how many hops it can take to get there.
