Don't laugh, but I am not sure what this is....i'm thinking a Rock Bass, but I've only caught those in rivers, this was caught in an old gravel pit.....

Yes that is correct, it is a Rock Bass.

Very common fish to find in places with rocky bottoms (ie - old rock quarry would be an ideal place to find them). Bluegill usually out compete them (except for in creeks and rivers where the rock bass will usually out compete the bluegill) and bigger bass tend to eat them, that is why you don't see them much besides in the creeks and rivers.

Gravel pits always have all sorts of surprises hiding in them, gotta love 'em. :) That's a Rock Bass to me.

The eyes give it away for sure - used to catch a lot of them up north when I fished rivers in MI when I was a kid. We always called them red-eyed rock bass.
