well, its been a month or so since the reports of carp
dying off in large number in the Portage Lakes due to a
mysterious gill disease that has finally caught up with them.
(these fish have had this disease for a good 5yrs now).iam
curious as to if anyone here acually seen the dead fish?i haven't
witnessed any myself because the fish seemed to show up in
areas i cant get to without a boat or living on the lakes.i have
''heard'' that the kill was pretty bad with hundreds of big fish
floating on the surface(i really dont know about this one, but?)
if anyone could please tell me what they seen out on the lakes
concerning dead carp, like numbers and possibly sizes of the dead
carp it would really be great and set my mind at ease.thanks.

I live on the Lakes and can tell ya I personally saw at least 10 large (14 lbs plus) carp floating or circle swimming at the surface. I don't think it got into the hundreds but all of them were large fish. About 3 weeks ago it was everytime I went out in the Mud lake area I was seeing one. I have not seen a floater or circle swimmer in the last 2 weeks. I think whatever was killing them got what it was going to get.

I saw about 30 in a weeks time. Haven't seen one since. They average at least 14# and a few were easily 20#+.

thanks alot guys.so i guess its pretty safe to say that
the whole carp population wasnt lost?theres still alot of heathly
carp left???and i take it as a good sign that you guys didnt spot
any of the really big 30lb+ fish (i hope they made it).

anyone else spot any dead/dying carp on the lakes in the last month?

I am curious if all the carp seen were in shallow water areas or if they were seen in open water, with depths of 20+ft.

    John,what makes you ask that?

another thing i am curious to is exactly which areas of the lakes
fish were seen.so far its been reported that carp were found in
    Turkeyfoot,Mud,East.no reports of West,Cottage Grove,Miller,
Rex but iam sure there had to be as they ar all connected.but
all the lakes including North and Long share the same water
and theres been no reports of kills in these lakes or the Tusc
River which all the water ends up anyway.iam thinking this disease
    is spread though contact?

It just makes me wonder if it's associated with weed die off that usually happens in the warm summer months. I know that mosquito has alot of weeds and the same dieoff occurs. i have flaws in my hypothesis though. weeds are abundant in mog. and minimal die off occurs, although a hand full of dead carp have been seen by me in the past. I also know there isn't a die off in pymy. Pymy is much more rocky than other lakes.
    any opinions?

i feel what your saying John, definally could be related to
weeds, the place surely has no lack of living or decaying weed..now regurading Mog.earlier in the summer i was told about several dead
commons being found in the weeds,i never thought anything of it as
there were not scores showing up dead.Mog and Pls are very similar.
the carp in Turkeyfoot (or all conected lakes) were said by the DOW
5 yrs ago to have a gill disease, they even stated that they were cons-
idering on getting their baby osprey chow(PLs carps)in other lakes because of this i never found out whatever came of this.there was some talk about the carp being deprived of O2 (due to decaying weed) that had stressed them, but i believe this would have effected other species long before carp(but there was a fish kill at the beginning of the yr of just about everything but carp?)

Isn't it plausible that possibly a toxin produced by a certain type of dying weed could cause a nerological disorder in the carp and not others? Also, i notice that certain PL lakes have a certain type of weed, maybe this is linked. I know mogadore abounds with all types but none are predominant all year. Also, maybe a parasite or fungus could be linked with a certain weed.

I saw one get washed up on the bank by a large wave on turkey foot, but really didn't notice too much odd behavior today.
