MENTOR, Ohio — A small earthquake under Lake Erie was felt Tuesday by people northeast of Cleveland but caused no injuries or damage, state seismologists said.

The quake measured a magnitude 3.1 and occurred about 8:40 p.m., and it was centered just offshore from the community of Mentor-on-the-Lake, said Mike Hansen, coordinator of the Ohio Seismic Network.

Quakes of a magnitude less than 4.5 usually don't cause any damage, he said.

Police in several communities reported calls from people who felt the quake.

Ohio has recorded more than 200 earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 2.0 since 1776, the Department of Natural Resources said.
