Was up drift fishing at Vermillion the other day and thought I was at the ocean fishing, set the hook and the spool started to spin and spin more, when it stopped it was half gone, after several more runs I got it to the boat, 30" and 17 lbs of Sheephead. A few photos and back in it went.
Prolly the biggest I have seen. Com64's Dad Skip caught one a couple years ago that went around 12 lbs. It was the biggest till this one.
Why didn't you get it mounted??
Did you check the state record?
he's about 5 lbs. short of the state record. Funny how some fish add weight exponentially with length. My 26.5" was only 6.8 lbs. That thing was probably a lot fatter than mine, though. I see the same thing in steelhead. A 33" fish can be 6 lbs. more than a 30" easy. Here's mine:
By the way, I hear the vents get inflamed like that since the sheep have been eating mussels and passing the shells. Don't know if that's true. Looks painful, either way.
