Salmon River NY Trip

Discussion in 'Fish on the Fly' started by Brasky, Aug 11, 2008.

  1. I am planning a trip to the Salmon River (NY) this October for some kings on the fly rod. I have never fished them before and only have experience with steelhead. I was wondering for some advice with patterns for that area/time of year. Thanks in advance.

They aren't technically feeding during the spawn. We usually use just about any bright colored fly or just as often a plain mustad with a couple rubber eggs on it.

You will essentially be sight-fishing and attempting to drift your fly into the chops of a fish. Very few fish will actually attempt to eat your presentation.
