Just got a boat that I feel comfortable taking on Erie when it's calm. Fished on many charters and this area (central basin) for perch, but want to try for some smallies. Looking for some areas closer to shore (no more than 3 miles) that are good for smallmouth. I'm really not familiar with the lake as far as spots (ex. reefs) and this type of fishing. Any help or suggestions would be geatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure where you are located, but we love to fish Ruggles out of Vermilion/Huron...basically launch out of Cranberry Creek Marina, and you can fish from there East to Sherod Park. There is a reef that runs right through there, within the first mile out...just keep your eye on the graph for the depth changes and structure...we throw a lot of tubes in this area.
