Mysterious river item, what is it?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by dinkbuster1, Mar 2, 2008.

  1. i have seen these "rods" in a few areas along the river, anyone know what they are? they seem really old. the one in the pic was sticking out of a 2ft cut bank and the round part may have been sticking out above the ground at one time before the bank washed away. think i remember seeing some rods like these along shallow "swampy" pond in a park when i was a kid and seem to remember seeing what i think now were "turtle lines" attached to them. 2. look like guy line anchors for telephone poles to me. maybe there were telephone, telegraph lines there once before the river eroded the shorelines.

They were also used to tighten farm fences, as well as line fences. They usually were drove in the ground then had a cable attached which was twisted to tighten the fences.
