Well since its the last day of the year, i might as well tell how my 2004 carp season went.(plus im BORED and was already skimming through this past years pics.)

    Feb:

Well my season started on the weekend of our CAG Ohio Video, Bait making, Tackle event.....Feb 28th, 2004
A great way to spend a winter day chatting with other anglers and checking out gear and looking at new baits, ect. After the event a few guys were talking of hitting the Scioto river downtown so a group of us headed over to give it a try.
This was my first time fishing downtown and it produced my first carp of 2004...it was'nt a big fish, but given the time of year, i'll take any size.

This fish was caught on flavored sweetcorn & a method feeder:

Sorry about the LINKS, but as ive already said in the "OGF PROBLEMS, REPORT THE HERE" area, i can not post pics. from my photo album in my threads...i used to beable, but something screwed up on this site.

    MARCH madness:

Well after catching my first carp of the year and getting the hard part over, it was time to try my normal Scioto river spots.
On march 16th Columbus got hit with a bad snow storm...i tried to make it to my spot that same day, BUT after a 30 min. ride that only got me 5 mins from my house normally, i decided to head back home.
The next day the temps. were nice and the winds died down, so i headed out to catch a "snow carp".
It took a lot of energy to get to my spot through all the snow we got the day before, my spot is a 3/4-1 mile hike. But soon after getting my rods rigged and in the water i started to get some action with light taps on the line. I caught my first mirror carp and was very excited and thought all the hard work paid off, but i was not prepared for the next run i would get. My left hand rod got a few beeps as the line twitched a few times, then slowly began to move...i set the hook and thought right away the fish had taken me through a snag...but it had'nt....i was WAY under gunned with my Shimano 3500 BTR's spooled with either 10lb or 12 lb main line(cant remember now) and 2.50 tc rods, a great set up for small carp(what i was expecting) or open water carpin, but not big fish near snags. This carp pulled like a truck even in very cold water and when i saw it roll i couldnt believe what i saw, after 3 trys to get it in my net, it was mine.
This fish was healthy and big and i had a heck of a time setting up my digital camera and getting us in the frame. After a few pics. i weighed the fish with my 50lb. digital scale and it read 30.09 lbs.

Heres a picture of my swim too:

    March madness:

    March 24th,
Well after my exciting last trip, i decieded to head back to catch some more. This day the water was a bit higher and my normal spot was hard to fish so i have a back up spot at the end of the Island thats next to a lot of slack water.
Not too many caught this day, but i did catch.

I got my first Buff. of 2004 this day and also a few single digit carp.

    April:

    4-03-04

Well my buddy Dave & I headed to a backwater spot on Alum he had been seeing carp rolling. We had a blast catching some nice carp in this area that day and they were all over....i caught them on both small boilies & sweetcorn, but most on the corn.

I kind of did things backwards as your supposed to work your way UP to big fish, but i already broke my PB at 30 lbs. and on this day i put one in the 20 lb. catagory....20.01 lbs.
Yes i didnt have a landing mat at this time and i would hold the fish most of the time instead of laying it on the ground, but during unhooking i couldnt help it. I got my big delivery from Wacker baits 2 days from this day and got all the stuff i needed.

    East Harbor/Cag Event:
Man what a fun time that was, Shawn was nice enough to split the cost of a camp site and share his tent with me(thanks again).
This weekend had it all...great friends, catching fish..."OK" weather(lol).

Well most all know about this weekend as they were there or read the good write up on the CAG OHIO site.

My big fish of the event:

    May: Pre-Spawn

Well there was a 2 week window were the big fat females were all holding and feeding right before spawn. I hit the river a lot these two weeks and all of the females were so fat you'd have to see it with your own eyes because a picture just doesnt do it.

This females sides were so big, as you can see she's not long and normally shes probably 15-16lbs. but during this time of the years shes at her heaviest of the year, 23 lbs.

Jack, Thanks for the vote of confidence.....i do have a feeling about how big a carp i can catch if i put the time into it..but i wont make any predictions just yet...again for 2005 my goal will be a 40 lber from an OHIO water.

Hunter33..thanks, my pics are full size to fit my computer screen at home...i just didnt want to hassel with resizing all of them just to post them . I used to beable to click "my photos" and choose from them, but it wouldnt let me do it anymore.

    More to come,
    Scott

well Rick, like ive said i used to be able to pull pics. from my photo album, but it started acting up and would let me into other pages(i have 3 ) it would only let me choose from the first page....but now it wont even let me choose from it.
If you check some of my old posts, i had no problem posting pics. but now it wont work.

Just tried it again...the "next page" at the bottom of the pop up screen after selecting my photos select to the right of this thread box.....it wont let me change pages and when i click on a pic. to post it..nothing happens!!!

    Summer:

Well sumertime was a blast too, i did spend a lot of my time wading for smallmouth bass & carp fishing. During June & July CAG had the Rocky Fork & Buckeye lake event...
The Rocky Fork event, for those who showed up was very slow, rainy and not much fun.
But the Buckeye event was HOT and balmy, if you didnt have some kind of shelter to block the sun it was almost too hot. This was the perfect event for kids and i took both my son's and got them on a few carp.

    Fall/winter;

Well fall is by far my favorite time of the year for any specie and is now for carp too.
I also hadnt been to the ole Ohio river at all this year because of all the rain and stuff, well Dave, Jake and I hit it in Oct. and we had the time of our life....almost uncountable amount of carp and Buffs, but the water was cooling down fast and the bigger carp had moved out of the tailwater areas..but next year when it warms back up..look out for a 100 carp per day here for sure!!

I broke my PB this season 3 times , once in March with my 30.09 lber, then in Aug. with a 34.05 lber, then in Sept. with my 36.00 lber

    PB:

    Winter:
Well i had been doing pretty well all late fall into early winter and the CAG had a gathering at COSI in Nov.
I met up with my buddy Jake who just returned from Ca. after a year living there. Dave & I put him on some big carp as soon as he returned and he was likeing the whole carp thing a lot....we met up at COSI and caught some very nice fish for this time of the year. This was my first time fishing COSI and except for the SNAGS it was a good place.

    My biggie of the day:

Since then i have stuck to my winter spot and catching some nice ones, but with the latest cold snap and dang duck hunters i have'nt been out in a week and a 1/2..GEEZ but 2004 was great to me and i have high hopes for 2005 now that i got some great spots and have put together a few awsome patterns for river carp.

Good luck to all in 2005!

See ya on the river bank somewhere,
    Scott

  14. Thanks RiverRat for the much needed fix. Got cabin fever but now I'm inspired to trudge (sp?) the cold. (Fla. boy here) Really enjoyed your success.
