Pike and Muskie are primitive as far as fish. The fish excrete a heavy slime coat high in protein and very protective.(keep it on the fish) The compounds in the slime give off the musty smell. The slime is very important to the protection of the fish. Information provided by Dr Gene Smith.

they can stink-up my boat anytime
I've grown quite fond of that aroma

  3. Thats why it is so important to protect that slime coat when you are handling the fish. Even if a fish swims away healthy it can still die a week or two later from infection....JIM

  4. Thanks for the info. There were quite a few posts about if muskie smell or not. I guess that's why they call it a MUSK-IE LOL
