Chaunc do you tip the hair jigs?
I usually tip with a crappie nibble but lately I haven’t needed too. This is my nephew. Chip off the old block.

My brother and I got back out on the lake yesterday. We do most of our crappie fishing drifting and there was a nice wind for that. We started out shallow and kept working our way out until we finally found a nice school of crappie in 16fow. I know that we caught over a hundred crappie but most of them were throwbacks. At least 2 dozen of the throwbacks were right at 9 inches. We were using Bobby Garlands and nibbles and the fish didn't care what color it was, they were hungry. Once we found the fish it was pretty much non stop action until we left. We ended up with 14 keepers. We were fishing the southside. The biggest keeper was 14". Some of the fish that we cleaned were full of eggs, so I'm not sure what's going on with the spawn this year. Water temperature was 67.

The 8 3/4" black crappie are thick and bend your pole bringing them in, now the white are thin... Sunday 11' was our depth 62 temp. south side by the blind

You gotta wonder if that large of a population of crappie is the decimation of the juvenile walleye population…schools that big on a feed must do some sorta damage if there’s a shortage of forage fish

Joe, I sad this about the 9” size limit two years ago. Crappies take 3 1/2 years to get to legal length to keep but most spawn at two years therefore putting more little ones in the lake. Thats a tremendous amount of small fish being introduced into the lake per year. This lake can’t handle this. Not every lake benefits from the size limit. Mosquito definitely isn’t one of them. Those 8 1/2“ fat blacks are going to put millions of little ones into the lake again. Probably the third time they spawned before they’re legal. Try to imagine the ratio of small to big crappies in this lake. Sure there’s some big ones there. The smaller ones outnumber them greatly. And remember, the big fish spawn too and add to the number of little ones per year. I hope this makes sense as it’s all hypothetical. I’m no biologist.

I agree with you 100%. I think that it would help the lake if they took the size limit off for a few years.

They took the size limit off at west branch and the size increase greatly. Never seen so many under size fish in this lake.

My brother and I were back on the water Wednesday. We got a early start so that we could beat the heat. We were using the same setup, Bobby Garlands and nibbles, that we always use. We fished anywhere from 8-16 fow and caught crappie in every depth but 14ft. seemed to be the best. 7 of the 9 keepers that we ended up with came from 14ft. We're planning on fishing next week but I think that we're going to launch at the State Park and fish the deeper water to see if maybe there are some bigger crappie hanging out in the deeper water. We were on the water at 6 and off by 10:30. water temperature was 70 degrees.

How was the water clarity? Weeds?
Water was pretty clear, I could see my Bobby Garlands at least 2ft. down. The only weeds that we that we ran into were the ones floating that the boats chewed up.

Me and a buddy were there yesterday. We put 19 keeper crappies in the box along with 20 bluegills. Early start at 6:30 and done before 11. Best depth for the crappies was 9ft and the gills were in 4.
