Mayfly hatch downtown

  1. I saw one a couple weeks ago. It was dark when I got down there, but I could tell there a lot of baitfish hitting on top. They were too far out to get with a cast net, and all I had with me was a medium heavy rod so I wasn't able to flip anything small out there either. I'm guessing they were shad, but could it have been anything else? I was wondering if anyone else has seen hatches here, and had any success catching fish or bait?
  2. Well, I'm not an expert on shad, but I don't think they eat insects, they eat zooplankton, micro organisms. You may have seen Skipjack eating the mayflies, would have been a good time to be tossing a small twister tail with just a little jig head.
Or small rooster tail, sabiki rig, etc.

  3. I forgot about skipjack, that's probably what it was.
  4. if it was small dimples on the surface it was mooneye, agresive strikes skipjack, go back down with a flyrod or little grubs see what happens
