  1. Team Hartman Wraps up 2007 Evinrude E TEC - Starcraft Marine LEWT Finale

The Western Basin Sportfishing Association (WBSA) held the final tournament of the 2007 Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) along with title sponsors Starcraft Marine and Evinrude E TEC on Saturday, September 8th at the Bulans Boat Yard in Vermilion. After a bad weather day on Friday limited the teams prefishing and scattered the fish, the participating teams found a tough bite in constantly changing weather conditions on Saturday.

Travis Hartman of Bellevue and David Hartman of Columbus Grove brought in five fish for 28.78 lbs to capture first for the event and notch their first tournament win as a team. Mike Robertson Potsdam and Mike Tobias of Covington came up just short with 4 fish weighing 28.18 lbs to finish second. Rounding out the top 5 were Dan Gies of Huron and Eric Weimer of Sandusky with 24.32 lbs, Steve Carlson of Huron and Jim Stedke of Wapakoneta with 21.72 lbs and Darik Warnke of Stow and Karl Warnke of Aurora with 21.42 lbs. Most of the top teams fished the northern part of the sand bar area off Lorain and Vermilion pulling Reef Runner crankbaits and worm harnesses. Warnke’s also reported catch fish in close to shore in 20 foot of water.

The Hartman father and son team ran away from the field for the big fish award. They brought a 10.74 lb walleye in to beat the competition. In addition to the $540 that fish was worth it also won them the Cranberry Marina Big Fish award of a free ramp pass for the remainder of 2007 and all of 2008.

It was a day to remember for the Hartmans as their win also propelled them to the 2007 LEWT Team of the Year award. They nosed out Robertson and Tobias by 2 points when it was all said and done and that showed the importance of the victory as that was the difference. This was the second year in a row for the father and son team to take the top honor for the series.

The winner of the “Just out of the money” award of a Navionics chip certificate worth up to $200 went to the team of Rob Cline and Dick Chicoine.
