Jumping fish in Grand????

Discussion in 'Northeast Ohio Fishing Reports' started by rweis, Jul 23, 2007.

  1. I was canoeing the Grand on Saturday and we kept seeing these fish jump occasionally. At first, I just figured they were Carp doing their thing. But sometimes the canoe, or us wading would seem to scare up the fish and they would jump right next to the boat. One almost made it. I got two brief looks and one time it looked like a White Perch, but the second one looked more Carp-like, with a down turned snout. Doesn't the Asian Carp have a more pointed nose than the Common? I just hate to think they may have been Asian Carp. Any ideas? Thnaks.
  2. Could have been a sucker, or better yet, a quillback. Looks like a silver carp with a turned down, sucker-type mouth.

If you were near the lake, it might have been a sheephead. I catch them pretty far up the rocky when fishing for smallmouth.

  3. I looked up the Quillback and that is the fish we saw. Whew!! Thanks for the info.
