Have a Johnson 5 1/2 hp motor that has developed what I would call a clattering or vibration noise. Runs good other wise, just try to diagnose engine noise. Any suggestions?

I'd check the play in the shift lever first. If not it may be the teeth in the gears. After a while you'll be in gear and hear a pop when it slips the worse it gets.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but i think your wrist pins are shot. i have heard that noise in a few old johnson and evinrude motors in the past. the faster you go the wilder the Clattering gets right ? it doesn't make the motor run bad you still have compression your hearing the wrist pins clattering.
