    Can anyone help with this?
I have an 1986 Johnson outboard I bought 2 years ago, the title says that it is an 15 horse. It has 9.9 stickers on the cover. How can I tell if it is a 9.9 or 15 hp? It is hard for me to tell because the boat it ame on is an 15ft Fisher, verynice boat but heavy.

the only difference between a 9.9 and a 15 is the carbs. it has the 9.9 decals on it so it can be used on 9.9 hp limit lakes such as piedmont and leesville, and pymatuming lake when it was only 9.9 water. it most likely is a 15 with a 9.9 motor cover.

Is there any way of telling what carb is on it?

I know merc put part numbers on everything. You can try loking for a part number.
