Wildlife Council approves increase in Canada goose bag limit

AKRON, OH – Hunters in the Lake Erie Goose Zone will get a bonus this season as the limit for taking Canada geese increases from one to two geese, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

In a vote taken Wednesday night, the Ohio Wildlife Council gave its approval of the measure. The increase is the first for this zone in 15 years. The season length also increases from 35 to 40 days. The Lake Erie Zone change was among several waterfowl measures passed August 24 by the Wildlife Council.

“Hunters who hunt Canada geese will be happy with the increased goose limit in the Lake Erie Zone. Many people have asked for this limit to be increased in past years,” said Steven A. Gray, chief of the Division of Wildlife.

The limit of only one Canada goose per day and the short season were established to protect the Southern James Bay population of Canada geese which nest north of Ohio, but migrate to and through Ohio in the fall and winter. The remainder of Ohio has had a season more than twice as long with a daily limit of two geese for many years.

“I am pleased that we finally got the daily limit of geese increased to two in the Lake Erie Zone. This area of Ohio has the most Canada geese, but the most restrictive hunting regulations,” said Gray. The Lake Erie Goose Zone is an area that includes all or part of 12 counties along Lake Erie from Toledo to the Pennsylvania state line.

The goose hunting season in Ohio must be set within the framework approved by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Division of Wildlife has been monitoring goose populations and migration in the state for several years to build the case for increasing the goose limit along Lake Erie.

The Division of Wildlife provided the necessary data while also voluntarily lowering the statewide September goose daily limit to three geese per day and reducing the season length in the remainder of Ohio from 70 to 60 days.

Goose hunting is very popular in Ohio and has been increasing in popularity. Hunters bagged an estimated 96,000 Canada geese in Ohio last year.
