Fly fishing carp

Discussion in 'Carp Discussions' started by lucky1, May 12, 2008.

  1. There is a local pond around me that is loaded with carp. I was thinking about taking my fly rod down there and having a ball. What kind of flies has anyone used for commons? I see them eating a lot of bugs off the top of the water, could I popper be successful?

    Thanks

  2. carp may seem like they are eating bugs off top, but scare so very easily if you fish for them with topwater lures. i mean if you drop that popper too close the fish gets scared. a better approach would be to imitate a piece of bread or corn or a berry that fell into water and let it sit. carp dont chase prey.i would try heavy nymphs imitating some larva or leeches(wooly bugger for steelhead will do)when you see fish digging up in shallow flats(so you can se them). throw that nymph roughly in the fishes path and slowly twitch it. hold on
