While looking over my 1975 Evinrude 9.9 outboard I noticed some debris that was trapped inside the cooling water exit port. The debris looks like some type of rubber foam. It is moderately soft and can be easily compressed. My first thought was the impeller had fragmented but when I opened the water pump housing it looked to be in decent condition.
All of the debris was right by the exit port, nothing else was found anywhere else. Any idea how this could have happened? The foam pieces are much larger than the screen opening on the water input port. I have attached a couple of images. Just had the boat out last week and the motor ran fine. Any response appreciated.
Thanks!

Had work done to our Mercruiser. Mechanic jammed a rubber glove in the impeller to stop it from draining. After Four sea trials we found this. Good luck
