Is there a place to put hydralic fluid for the hydrolic pump in to raise and lower the engine? I hear the pump coming on but it won't go up or down? And if so, what type of fluid would I use? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Mercury outboards says Automatic Transmission Fluid is a suitable alternate in their motors. Look in the lower unit section of the service manual or specifications section, it may give you suitable alternates for your Johnson. I would bet ATF will work in yours too.

  5. I have a manual for older 1 and 2 cyl Johnnyrudes up to 1989 and it says you can use GM Dexron II or the OMC T & T fluid.

Yep you guys were right! I filled it up with tranny fluid and it is working great now. Appreciate the help! I just hope I don't have a leak. Not sure what caused it to get so low.
