For those with electric downriggers, which battery do you hook them up to...trolling or ignition? Just getting some new ones, and I never ran them on my boat before.

    thank

  2. I have them hooked to my starting battery. I replaced the old one this year with a much larger "combination" starting/deep cycle. That being said , i NEVER had problems running the starting battery down using the downriggers or anything else hooked to it. (fish finder, vhf etc.). that being said, 90% of the time the big motor is running. that's all i use to troll with if I wanna go over 1.6 or so. under that , I use my electric, depending on wind/waves.

I have my fish finder, GPS, ship to shore, Troll Master, and downriggers hooked up to my cranking battery, and never had a problem. My kicker motor charges the battery while it's running. Not much, but apparently enough to keep the battery from going dead.

Everything in my boat also runs from the cranking battery, including my downriggers
