Caught 4 bluegill dinks today, had to leave hooks in all of them. Do they survive that?

If there are dinks, there must be bigger dinks in the water. How does a person find those bigger dinks? Can a 1/3 acre pond support bigger dinks?

Small ponds can get overpopulated and the fish will only get so big. If it's your pond start throwing all the small gills you catch in the trash. Think about goldfish in a bowl. Put 4 fish in the bowl and they will all grow to the same size and then stop growing no matter how much you feed them. Remove one fish and the other 3 fish will grow a little bigger then stop again. Or you could also put some decent size bass in the pond to try and thin them out.

NO. Pygmy is a pygmy.... no matter how much food is available. Genetics play an important roll in fish development & growth potential.

Ohio does not have limits on gills and has affected some lakes! That being said some lakes need them some don’t with regard of the lakes ecosystem

I use a larger hook to prevent the smalls from getting hooked. Use a size 4 or 2.

Healthy bass populations create large gills in a body of water.

The mortality rate of a gut hooked fish with a hook left in it is very high. Get some forceps for your panfish trips, makes it really easy.

If the lake is overpopulated the fish will become stunted as stated above. Genetics also play a role. In-fisherman has documented this in several articles over the last year or so. Taking all of the big fish also takes their genes out. If every human in the world over six feet tall died, how many in the next generation would be taller than 6 ft? Let the big ones go, keep the eater sized ones to sustain the future of the fishery
