I want to begin a new thread about what is working here in our area. No need to give away your hot spots. Just identify the body of water and the general description of the situation that day and explain how you caught fish. Any species. I will start by telling about my recent trip to Alum Creek lake. It is 12-24-19. The last few days, the air temps were in the 40s with almost no wind. I had to see if I could catch a few. I did. I will attempt to post the pics. I usually don't take fish pics, but I hope this might stimulate some participation in the thread. Photos are from 12-22-19. Searching with the Hummers revealed that the best concentrations of fish were all in 30 -35 feet of water. I found a couple of spots that were in what I call drains. That is the mouth of a cove. Where does the fish have to go if the water drains out of it? They were also close to natural sharp breaks into deep water, with shallows close by. Maybe to feed at night? I tried blade baits. Jigging Raps worked best. Orange and Gold was my best colour. The best action was snapping it up a couple of feet and letting it hit bottom. Then, holding it still really close to the bottom. Maybe even letting it lay on the bottom. The fish would grab it while it was barely moving most time. Water temps on the surface were 37 to 39 degrees. Ice was covering a couple of spots I would have liked to fish. The main lake was open. A portion of the middle section north of Cheshire was still covered with ice about a 1/4" thick. It was an absolute pleasure in the afternoon. Moths were hatching somewhere. Tiny moths were on the surface as it got towards evening. The gulls were all over them. I did not fish unless I saw fish and bait nearby. I caught Saugeyes and Smallmouth with a few crappies and white bass mixed in. I think the baitfish in the area I did best in were White Bass. I caught five inches on a chrome sonar. There must be other ways to see them when facing those conditions.
What is working for you?

We fished Hoover after work yesterday. We caught over 100 crappies but only 25-30 were keepers. Biggest was 13.5”. All released. Tried north of oxbow and only small ones. Then we moved further south and found some nice ones near the trees in about 6’ water. All on chartreuse jigs. Water was 72 up north and 69 main lake.

Fished for a few hours yesterday at Alum with both kids (6 and 8). My 8 year old caught two Fish Ohio rock bass! Biggest was just over 10" and super chunky. Fishing with two kids is pretty exhausting especially if you try to get any fishing in yourself. I did catch one small crappie (9") and one small saugeye (10"). But we had a bunch of fun and the kids probably landed 40 fish between the two of them, mostly sunfish.

I went ot Buckeye Lake Yesterday with friend. Purpose was to find new Saugeye spots. Didnt really find anything that screamed Saugeye here! So we went to our old spots and caught a limit. Pretty sure the Saugeye Fest on Buckeye will end in week or so. I did go down a canal that I thought was 1Basshunter's.. Hey Bud.. where'd you get those Statues that look so real.. You rent out that party house?

Had probably my best day of catfishing on Hoover. Planned to fish a couple of my usual spots in the middle pool, but after battling the wind for a while decided to try something a little more sheltered, but a spot I had never fished before. I found some crappie still shallow and in the brush. Also picked up a couple small saugeye that were hanging out with the crappie. Once I had a few crappie for bait I decided to drift the same area just out a little deeper. Water depth was 6-8 ft so instead of dragging bottom and getting snagged I put on a bobber and set my bait about 5 feet down. It didn't take long. My first blue was 40+lbs, my personal best. The next fish was 32lbs. I caught a few more smaller fish, and then got a 25, and a 15. Ended up with 9 fish at the end of the day. I've had days with more fish, but never that many big fish.

Sorry, no pics. I was fishing solo and there's no good way to take a picture of a big fish in a kayak. I could use a fishing partner/photographer! 😃
Tried Hoover for 1st time- two weeks ago, caught one channel in 2 ft. Dragged all different depths with no takers. . More snags than anywhere else. Got some back and lost some rigs. Planning on trying again 5/26 before the holiday weekend crowds the lake. Hope to find your 40 pounder's mother. Will take any catch but hoping for my 1st Blue. Was planning on floating baits this time and drag some.

Tried for some of the carp in Antrim today and got none. My 8 year old was desperate for one. We got as far as one eating all the corn we had tossed out and while we were distracted something took one of our lines with corn on it and broke the line. So maybe we have the right idea just need to work on execution. We tossed out corn and put some kernels on a #4 or so dark colored hook one with sinker two without and put all three out there near our chum corn. We left bails open at first but after not noticing the one breaking the line we instead set drag really light. Any suggestions for improvement there? There are some sizable carp in there!

If I was going out today I'd target that same area, relatively shallow water with brush nearby that should be holding crappie. Cool mornings will keep the water temp steady through the weekend, but water levels are dropping. Next week the water will drop more and heat up and that will push the crappie out. The cats will follow. Good luck!!

I’ve been fishing CJ Brown for a couple weeks. You can catch post-spawn white/black crappie all day long at the marina using bass minnows under a bobber. Depth varies from day to day. Largest run around 13”. Great place for taking kids based upon ease in catching. You’ll catch an occasional bluegill, white bass or channel cat using the same rig.

Explored the Olentangy near Broadmeadows low head dam yesterday, casting a rooster tail. I caught one tiny tiny smallmouth, one just small smallmouth, and then this guy:

I think it’s a black tail shiner. I can’t believe he was able to get the hook in his mouth. Would have made great bait if I’d been set up for it but I was trying to get home before the kids were asleep. Still it was pretty fun to catch such a little and pretty fish.

Good stuff! Know that low head dam well and can be excellent Smallmouth area.

Went to the north pool at Alum on Saturday afternoon and got really lucky. On a very nice day, a Memorial weekend Saturday, I was able to find an empty parking spot for my truck and trailer. Unbelievable! The fishing wasn't bad either. I was catching Crappie in the sticks, around the sticks, and in the middle of the lake. Found a bunch about 5-6 ft down in 16 FOW and caught three 11-12 inchers in 5 casts on a roadrunner. Of course, the wind blew me off the spot and I couldn't find them again. Also got a couple nice Channel Cats, one of those on the roadrunner.

Another nice day on Alum north pool Wednesday. Drifting along the wall, tossing a Roadrunner toward any blowdowns til I hooked up. Then I would anchor the canoe, toss out a bass minnow and start throwing the Roadrunner again. I would usually pull a couple more Crappie from the around same pile before moving on. They seemed to prefer the Roadrunner to the minnows, but the little ones left the minnows alone entirely.
Also caught a 22" Channel Cat on the roadrunner with my ultralight rig. DW has decided she likes Catfish, so even though I had sworn off them for life, I decided to keep it. I love catching them, especially on an UL rig, but ate enough for 2 lifetimes when younger.
After getting my personal limit of 10 fish,I released everything else.

Those roadrunners are the ticket most days. Probably boated over a thousand crappie this spring and caught maybe 20 under 10” on roadrunners. Using minnows it seems to be the opposite for me. Any color plastics work best today?

The Roadrunner I've been using has a red head and the same chartreuse plastic that was on it when I bought it a few weeks ago :D It's finally starting to show some wear but still hanging in there. Maybe the reason the small Crappie were leaving my bass minnows alone was because most of the minnows were a good 3 1/2" long and I tried to keep them farther from the sticks so they wouldn't get snagged up.

There are some very nice new spots on the lake that are holding Saugeye and then there’s always the tow path that is a good place….. but I like going to the newer ones that don’t get much pressure!!! Just send me a pm and I’ll give them to you

Be glad to. The voices in my head are usually pretty good company, but a change of pace is always welcome.
I hear you! I'm pretty much the same when it comes to fishing. I have a kayak so I just be in the general area not right on top of you! Haha
