I want to begin a new thread about what is working here in our area. No need to give away your hot spots. Just identify the body of water and the general description of the situation that day and explain how you caught fish. Any species. I will start by telling about my recent trip to Alum Creek lake. It is 12-24-19. The last few days, the air temps were in the 40s with almost no wind. I had to see if I could catch a few. I did. I will attempt to post the pics. I usually don't take fish pics, but I hope this might stimulate some participation in the thread. Photos are from 12-22-19. Searching with the Hummers revealed that the best concentrations of fish were all in 30 -35 feet of water. I found a couple of spots that were in what I call drains. That is the mouth of a cove. Where does the fish have to go if the water drains out of it? They were also close to natural sharp breaks into deep water, with shallows close by. Maybe to feed at night? I tried blade baits. Jigging Raps worked best. Orange and Gold was my best colour. The best action was snapping it up a couple of feet and letting it hit bottom. Then, holding it still really close to the bottom. Maybe even letting it lay on the bottom. The fish would grab it while it was barely moving most time. Water temps on the surface were 37 to 39 degrees. Ice was covering a couple of spots I would have liked to fish. The main lake was open. A portion of the middle section north of Cheshire was still covered with ice about a 1/4" thick. It was an absolute pleasure in the afternoon. Moths were hatching somewhere. Tiny moths were on the surface as it got towards evening. The gulls were all over them. I did not fish unless I saw fish and bait nearby. I caught Saugeyes and Smallmouth with a few crappies and white bass mixed in. I think the baitfish in the area I did best in were White Bass. I caught five inches on a chrome sonar. There must be other ways to see them when facing those conditions.
What is working for you?

dculberson, I think that's awesome! Continue to take her out and soak it up!! Let me just say, it doesn't change when they get older eithe.! My youngest just graduated from OSU on Sunday and today he's headed to Nebraska to check out a job opportunity. So, yesterday afternoon, he and I took the boat out because I'm sure these opportunities will be less in the very near future. We ended up catching 33 crappie with several being 12". I have a 10" minimum on the boat so we also threw back several under 10". Also, I caught my first muskie! Just 15" but it was a surprise I'll take. My son has caught crappie but never had a day like that so we both had a lot of fun fishing together. Best technique was roadrunners up against the banks.

Yesterday after work I set the minnow trap in the creek behind our house. The 8 year old came home about 1.5 hours later and we checked it and had a nice dozen or so perfect crappie bait sized chubs. I asked her if she wanted to go fishing in the morning and she said 'YES!!' This morning at 6am I asked her if she still wanted to go fishing and she about shot out of the bed. We walked down to the local lake and targeted crappie with a chub under a float while she was casting a rooster tail. She's getting really good at casting the spinning rod! The chub float started going under and like an idiot I grabbed it. I lost whatever it was, but she finished her rooster tail cast and took over and sent the chub back out. Fish took it again but lost it again. Cast the chub out again, and a few seconds later it was on! She landed a nice ~11-12" rainbow trout.

Now, we'd decided on catch and release this morning, but one look at that rainbow and she said "I know we were going to let them go but he looks so delicious!" Who can say no to that. I filled a bucket and we kept it. I landed a nice 11" crappie and decided since we're keeping one fish might as well keep more. We went back and forth on landing fish, and her third fish was a beautiful Fish Ohio rock bass, just over 9".

She also landed a nice 10.5" crappie.

I let one dink crappie (well, just over 9") go and we let the rock bass go so all told we went home with three crappie and the trout. I did the cleaning, making me a little late to the office this morning, but dinner (today or tomorrow) should make it worth it.

Nothing hit on the rooster tails we were tossing. We got a few follows and one nibble by a crappie but otherwise everything was on the chubs. Overall it was a great spring fishing morning!!
Nice work! That lake should really be turning on! Time to ride my bike on up there and throw some creature baits for the bass in there.

Found some good crappie in close at alum this morning. Managed 4 all like this in a half hour. Unfortunately I was on my way to work, not home so I let them swim! I guess it was fortunate for them! Editing to include the details. 32nd ounce jig with a 1-in gulp minnow under a float.

You’re raising her right!
Finally got out in the kayak for the first time this year. The cats weren't where I expected them to be this time of the year. It was a grind but I did find
a couple nice blues. It's tough getting a good pic in the yak. For perspective my kayak is 33 inches wide, so this fish is 38-40 inches. Didn't get a weight, but guessing mid to upper 20's. I got its twin about an hour later.

Fished Alum for Crappie yesterday and did well. Bunch of nice sized female White Crappie full of eggs, and no males. Did get 2 male Black Crappie from the same hole in the blowdown, but no females. I've heard that you don't find the blacks and whites together so this brought the infamous line from Blazing Saddles to mind.

You’ll definitely find blacks and whites within a 10’ circle together. For the most part I find the blacks super shallow during the spawn and the whites super shallow to 15’ deep or so. But definitely no dividing line atleast where I fish.

Buddy and I fished alum today from 1-6. Tried a few coves and caught a few close to shore. Then we Went into a cove in the south pool. Started fishing the mouth in 4-5’ of water. Started catching crappies on almost every cast. Then started fishing a bunch of coves at the mouths. Ended up with over 100 crappies. Over 50 of them were over 12”. A lot of females looked like they were ready to burst. We then put on small paddle tailed jigs and started casting. Caught 6 saugeyes with 3 keepers. Biggest was 20”. Caught bluegills, white bass, smallmouths, largemouths, saugeyes and crappies. Biggest lm bass was around 3 pounds and smallie was around 2.5 lb. Caught a nice white bass around 2.5 lbs. we could have caught all the crappies we wanted but actually got tired of catching them. Around 6 the skies started getting dark and we checked the weather map. It showed a big storm coming and we got off the water. Good thing we did about 15 minutes after getting trailered up it let loose with the rain. Wish it stayed spring year round. Lol.

With the crappie being on fire over the past week, I took my wife out fishing for crappie for the first time. The lake we went to was super crowded with every cove having at least one boat in it. Even saw one small cove that was about half a football field that had 6 boats in it! My wife at one point was catching them faster than I could put the net down. She also managed to catch the most and biggest fish between the two of us. Caught several 12" fish and kept fish that were between 10.5" to 12". Unfortunately, she did not want to hold the fish so we took a picture together of the fish she caught. Most of the fish were caught on a jig and float (color, size or shape did not matter). I even managed to catch a 12" male crappie while bass fishing on a 3.3" keitech.

Definitely!! I roasted the trout for dinner last Wednesday and she ate the whole thing herself. Even picked the bones out herself. I made hush puppies to go with it. The crappie, I cut up into little boneless cubes and fried with a diluted down version of the hush puppy batter and it was amazing. There was enough left over for me to take to work the next day and somehow it tasted even better heated up in the toaster oven here.

I stopped by the Olentangy "saugeye spot" on my way home yesterday and fished for about 10 minutes, landing one ~16" saugeye, my second ever. My pic didn't turn out well, you mostly see the net. He had some bits of fish stuck to his fin - it almost looked like cut bait? It was hanging off his dorsal fin, and at first I thought he had a parasite or serious injury. But after landing him in the net it came off in the net and he was uninjured. What the heck?

Very weird. My guess it that it disgorged some partially digested fish when you caught it, and somehow they got caught on the fin. I dunno.

Went to Alum 5/18. While prepping my canoe at the marina dock, I heard someone say 'There's an OGF flag, haven't seen one of those in years', or something to that effect. I turned to the speaker and asked if he was a member and he saidyes. Turns out it was Erie Addict with what I assume was two grandsons. They were joined shortly by maybe his daughter (Wife?) and granddaughter (?) and headed to the launch. An hour and a half or so later, as I was entering the cove I wanted to try, they were leaving and EA graciously told me they had 'left them all' for me. I asked if they were even biting and he said no. It had taken me so long to get my canoe to this cove, I decided I would give it the old Boy Scout try anyway. Well, he was right. In three hours I only caught 6 fish. An 11" Crappie and a short, a hand sized gill and a short. My 1st ever Perch, all of 5" long, and my new PB Rock Bass at 10 1/2". So, Not many fish, but a good day none the less. The small Crappie, small Gill, and perch were caught on crappie minnows, all others on rooster tail.

Stopped by Antrim and fished for a bit with chubs under a float with the 8 year old. She landed a nice rainbow trout that was not going to make it. We initially released it but it was just floating so we put it in a bucket and took it home. It was dead before we got home so it was the right call. I cleaned it and it’s in the fridge ready for her dinner tomorrow. We wanted to get some carp but worms and corn on the bottom after dark didn’t get it done. On the way back home we stopped at the fishing dock there and saw several big carp actively feeding right near the dock. Ahh well maybe we’ll just try from the dock next time!

Hit the north pool of Hoover yesterday for catfish. My usual place where I throw the cast net for shad didn't produce so we had to spend the first hour catching a few crappie for bait. Once we had bait we drifted along the channel and tried out a few new spots. Ended up with 6 cats, with one around 20lbs and another over 30lbs. I was fortunate enough to have a fishing partner today to take a decent pic.

Alum smallmouth were on fire last night. A friend and I went out on the boat testing my new prop then when he started to look green we went in and fished from the rocks. I only landed one smallmouth (16-17"?) but hooked two more. One put up one hell of a fight and ended up pulling the hook off the line! I swear I know how to tie a knot! You could see the smallmouths feeding and several were jumping out of the water fully eating bugs. The sunset was incredible and the weather was perfect. Also my new prop is great, I think the old one was cavitating as the pitch was too shallow and the boat is much smoother with the new one.

Had probably my best day of catfishing on Hoover. Planned to fish a couple of my usual spots in the middle pool, but after battling the wind for a while decided to try something a little more sheltered, but a spot I had never fished before. I found some crappie still shallow and in the brush. Also picked up a couple small saugeye that were hanging out with the crappie. Once I had a few crappie for bait I decided to drift the same area just out a little deeper. Water depth was 6-8 ft so instead of dragging bottom and getting snagged I put on a bobber and set my bait about 5 feet down. It didn't take long. My first blue was 40+lbs, my personal best. The next fish was 32lbs. I caught a few more smaller fish, and then got a 25, and a 15. Ended up with 9 fish at the end of the day. I've had days with more fish, but never that many big fish.

Sorry, no pics. I was fishing solo and there's no good way to take a picture of a big fish in a kayak. I could use a fishing partner/photographer! 😃
