cavitation plate crack

Discussion in 'Boats and Motors' started by sawguy1, May 5, 2008.

  1. I was getting my boat ready for the weekend and notice a small crack in the cavitation plate. It’s a 75 hp Yamaha. The crack is on the port side about 1” long. Goes from the out side in. I have no idea how long it has been there. I never notice it when I change lower unit oil at the end of the season last year.
How bad is it? I looked the lower casting parts up looks like to big of a job for me to get in to. Can it be welded? I have full coverage insurance Thinking of calling them up I don’t see why it would not be covered.

  2. Yes it can be welded,,check your insurance some only cover the boat in the water ,,so you may have to have hit a log .not some short guy standing on it trying to get some thing out of the boat,or replacing a battery on it trying to get it out of the boat ,,,I have seen them both happen on one of my boats ,Yamaha uses real good aluminum and weld good
