Got into 67 fow, set up all the rods. Hooked four fish right away, lost one eye, boted two and one steelhead. Pulled two more rods in with white perch and white bass. Set all the rods in the top rod holders as we were pulling them in with fish.

BUZZZZZZ!!!! This loud buzzing sound all around us. Took some time to realize it was coming from the top rods, so it seamed. One particular rod was buzzing the loudest. Went to pull it out, and as i was getting my hand closer to it, the buzzing change to a very high pitch sound, very strange.

Stopped for a second then went to pick it up. As soon as I touched it, FLASH, a thunder struck, not us, but damn near, enough to blind me for a second. Coincidence???? Two minutes later we were on plane towards Cleveland at 35 mph. 5000 rpms.

A few minutes later, the outboard started acting up like it wasn't getting gas. Soon we realized that we can go up to 4000 rpms (20 mph), but when going over 4000 rpms it was winding down, stalling almost. Will check it tomorrow and hope nothing major!

Made it to port safely, in time to take the picture, but not to put the boat on the trailer. Had to wait the storm out in my truck before I was able to put it on the trailer.

Glad you bailed on that spot quickly. Had similar experience a couple years ago, only my buddy was zapped twice with static shock when tending to some lines. Scared the beejeebers out of us for sure. By the time we made it to port it was hailing. When we first got zapped the closest clouds were miles away!

I saw that once two yrs ago. You could hear buzzing and once I got shocked when I pick up a pole. We were driftig and when you would cast your line would go up instead of settling into the water...Freaky stuff...we bailed...

Had that same thing happen a few times to myself. My buzz was from the marine radio antenna. Kinda of scary when it happens.
Good thing you got the hell out of there.

Years ago while on a Headboat (Miss Cindy) a quick front moved through with lightening in the distance. Rod tips buzzed for about a half hour. After the front passed we continued to fish and those walleye were on fire.

Virgil we were all at the Boat Club at Edgewater for the tourney meeting I saw you coming in, boy you got off just in time, that may have been one of the worst storms I have ever seen in my life, the lighting, wind, thunder was just crazy out of this world. Good move getting out of there when you did. The storm surge had the docks in the marina underwater, 20 minute later back to normal the water litterly rose 2-3 ft in the matter of minutes when the wind came, the news said 65 mph winds. Yeah that'll do it!

i have experienced that on more than one occasion and i agree, it was one of the most freaky things i have ever whitnessed. the crackling on the antennas and rods on the hard top is weird in the calm before the storm but then when you cast out and all the line is off your spool sailing away like a kite and your lure is only a few feet underwater you feel like you are in the twilight zone.

Of about the half dozen folks that I have heard of that have been struck by lightning while out on the lake, all reported the buzzing rods and other stuff mentioned in this thread.

These things may not guarantee a direct lightning strike but I would say they are a sign that the odds have increased DRAMATICALLY!!

I was out with my 3.5 year old daughter around here on Buckeye Lake and the pole started buzzing and her hair was standing straight up. It was pretty scary, because she was on the boat. I was powered only by trolling motor, so couldn't move fast, but made it back ok none the less

I had that happen to me last year. We were out casting and the poles started crackling and then the line started to lift up in the air as far as you would let it, I must have had it up 50 ft before I decided "this probably isnt a good idea." I was dumbfounded though. I've been out in alot of bad storms and that was the first time I ever saw that.

Nice fish, I hope to get into some steel soon
