Best area for a newbie?

Discussion in 'Steelhead Talk' started by tmerk, Dec 29, 2008.

  1. Gents- Looking to take my dad out fishing in the next week or two, and would like to try our hand at steelheading. We fish the creeks and rivers all summer long for smallies, and always have a blast. I've heard for several years now about how awesome steelhead fishing is, and would like to give it a shot. We've got waders and normal spinning gear, and a small selection of jigs, etc. Just wondering which river and area would be our best bet to get started? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I don't know if you were thinking about the Rocky River or not, but I would drive towards the mouth, look for spots guys are fishing and ask them for some tips or spots you can fish, maybe even join them. You have to expect to be turned down though as steelheaders can be a wiley bunch. Some will help, some absolutely will not. Be respectful and see what happens. Good luck!
