Caught this bass in Lake Erie, it had a black patch on top that I have never seen before. Almost looks like it had an extreme suntan. It was a very healthy fish that was hanging out shallow around rocks. Any ideas?

I believe that it often has to do with diet. When I was in college, I asked one of the icthyology professors, and he suggested that it was high levels of amino acids, or proteins, which cased the black blotches. Of course, there are also some infections that can cause blotching. But, you say the fish was healthy, so perhaps it was dietary.

I was on Watts Barr lake in Tenn over the past week and of the 100+ crappies I caught that week, probably 1/3 of them at the black marking on them like the bass.

I failed to mention that I caught another bass with this marking and it was equally as healthy as the one pictured. The black spot did not look like a growth of any kind, just looked like it was born that way (obviously not).
Thanks for the input.
