Yippie, gonna have them scope and cut on my knee. I was on the floor last week with the kids and when I got up my knee locked almost went to er but it unlocked somehow. Went to work the next day as knee was sore but good to go. Crouched down before work began and I was on my way to the er. Lot of good that did, misdiagnosed and sent home in agonizing pain (second only to kidney stones) and told to call ortho doc. First place I called mid. jan. for an appointment for new patient. Do these people really understand the concept of waiting 5 weeks with use of one leg and trying to work and support a family  So, called another and got in tuesday. In the meantime, Friday, I figured out how to get that torn piece from between my bones.
So scope and fix it is. Laid up from 1-6 weeks. Prob. go bankrupt but who knows if the next time,if it will unlock again. Haven't really got much info. from doc. yet due to waiting on ins. to ok it all. I am a little worried, I don't like the idea of being put under, would like to be awake and watching the monitor and listening for any uh oh's. Hoping that there is some open water around that I don't have to walk out on ice with crutches cuz there is no way I can sit it this house for that long. I am stir crazy after the weekend.

    Glad ya let me ramble.

Sorry to hear that! a year and a hlaf or so, while loading the truck when we were moving our business, I fell from the back of the truck and landed wrong on one leg and pop.......went to the ER later in the day and had to go to a specialist........MRI then found out my ACL was completely torn and Cartilage is gone from between the bones.....now I live with the pain and all that....Sometimes I can not even tell it is screwed up then other times I can hardly walk.....My options??? Well Live with it till I can get it fixed, have bad arthritis early in life, or can have is fixed, be out of full work for 5-6 months as long as things go ok....Now how is a 24 year old with Child support and all the other bills that go with life supposed to miss 5 months of full time work??? Can't...So I live with the pain and hope each day I do not twist it or whatever to hurt it worse. I always have to wear a brace to make sure my knee does not fall apart basically. It is funny though, the brace they had specially fitted for my leg and all is painful to wear and makes it harder to get around. I went to Rite-Aid and bought an Ace support brace for12 bucks or so and it feels better than the 400-600 buck brace they gave me, well sold me! Some day I will get it fixed...Hopefully they will have some miracle way of doing it with only a month off or so! :D

right now, my knee actualy has no pain at all. What scares me is that when is is all done that it will be worse. And of course being from small town usa, I have heard everyones horror story from this doc. I figure the good stories just arent fun to tell. I can't really afford to be off that long either but I have a forgiving retirement fund and hopefully when all said and done AFLAC will pay nicely.

And Catking, DIP and I discussed knitting and quilts but you've never shown us how like you promised>

  6. I had the arthroscopic surgery several years back to remove cartilage. The problems sounded pretty similar to yours although I don't believe my was locking to the extreme yours was. I can tell you that the surgery was a breeze at least for me. They removed two pieces of cartilage almost an inch apiece. I was out the same day as outpatient and was taking steps two at a time that evening. (not by the doctor's recommendation;)) The only discomfort I had following the surgery was getting rid of the swelling. They actually inject your knee with fluid to help make room for them to work in there. My incisions were small and healed pretty quickly. It was the best decision I made to have it done and hopefully you are saying the same thing soon. It has been like 6 years for me and it still feels great...well as great as nearly 40 year old knees can feel after a good workout.

i have had my left knee done twice in the past 2 years, both times i was was back at work in 2 weeks.....now i pushed it a bit and i could have rode it out for a few more weeks but it didn,t feel to awful bad......you want them to knock you out beleive me.....i woke up in the middle of my 2nd one and almost freaked out so let them sedate the crap out of you and when you wake you,ll be in recovery.........don,t worry its not real bad or painful.......matter of fact it may be less painful that what your dealing with now....................good luck............

  9. Scopes dont do any good. I had one done, and 3 months later they were reconstructing it. If it cartlidge tear then it should help. If they mend the cartlidge then your on the couch for 4 weeks, if they cut it out 2 weeks. If by chance they find ligament damage, well then who knows.

  10. Shadowman,
You must have had more done than just cartilage removal and cleanup? I was only off the job for 2 days. I do have an office job but I was walking on it almost immediately and just had it wrapped. But like you said the pain from the injury is probably worse than any of the pain experienced afterward for me as well.

  11. Wow CTPN. Crown!

You sound like you had a really bad experience with the arthroscopic surgery. I agree if they are trying to do more than clean up the joint and removing loose cartilage (I believe they call it debriment) then perhaps the arthroscopic would not be as effective. I think though that you may be the first one that I have ever heard speak so negatively of the arthroscopic surgery. For most that I hear from they were very pleased.

    I've had both knees scoped.

Scopes are a cakewalk. If you are down more than a week to ten days it's because you want to be down.

Both times they just gave me a spinal and I was able to watch the screen and the little pacman in there working.

In both cases I had my leg up and iced for a couple of days to get the swelling down and was back to almost normal in a week.

Those were both 20 years ago. Now I get to see my doctor about complete knee replacement this January

yeah, I think I should be back to work in a couple of weeks. Got funds secured for 4 so he better not mess things up or find any other goodies. there is a bone chip floating around the outside, hope he leaves it there. Felt almost no pain today at work, went to kmart a bit ago and crouched down and it locked again. ow, now it hurts a bit. Thought about the spinal but I set in on taps before and no way. As far as amputating, if it would not unlock at all, I'd would have cut the dang thing off myself. No way to live with that for a month. Thanks for the stories, I am enjoying them. Catking, nothings changed. She still calls all the time only now she's got the timing down to when I am baiting, or reeling in or otherwise busy. The electronic leash I call it. As long as she can talk to me it is like I am not gone. The best part is when I hang up for the heck of it and say we got disconected. lol

bkr, i think the reason he wanted me off for a few weeks was that as a mechanic i do spend some time here and there on my knees ( don,t even think it.............lol.........) or a bit of crawling around...........funny cause when we 1st talked about it he wanted me off of it for a month.......i told him no way..........yeah it was damaged pretty good in there the miniscus was tore from one side all the way to the other side and than some........thought he had it fixed but ended up having him have to do it all over again.........and to boot after all of that its worse now than ever...........i think they do things like that on purpous to get you back under the knife again...................
