I put my kayak in on the Lower LMR last Friday evening looking for some hybrids. I started by paddling upstream and made it a 1/2 a mile till I found a nice hole and immediately found a 2' gar on the end of my line. I paddled back down stream to the next hole and caught a 12" smallie. I have never had much luck catching smallmouths in any of the lower sections of the lower rivers so I felt lucky. My next fish was a nice 3' gar and it put up quite a fight. I had to take my kayak to shore to unhook the toothy beast. I finally got to a fishable riffle where I could get out of my yak and concentrate on fishing a pool, hoping for a hybrid. My first fish was a small channel cat. Then a sauger. I finally ended my night with another great 12" smallie. All fish were caught with a small lipless crankbait. I had a great multi-species evening. Now if I can find some more free time, hopefully I can hone in on finding the hybrids before winter begins.
