July 7th Gander Mountain Migration Open Walleye Tournament The Western Reserve Walleye Association (WRWA) and the Western Basin Sportfishing Association (WBSA) will combine efforts to hold the second annual Gander Mountain Migration Open Walleye Tournament on July 7th out of Geneva State Park on Lake Erie. After a successful first year the clubs expect the field size to grow and exceed 40 teams for this years event with almost 30 teams already signed up. This will be a 2 man team event with each team bringing their largest 5 fish to the scales. In addition to the total weight for 5 fish there will be optional pots for largest single walleye and steelhead that the teams can enter. Cost for entering the event is $150 per team and the optional big fish pots are $20 per species. There will be an 80% payback of entry fees to 1 out of every 4 teams entered and the big fish pots will be paid back at 100%. There are no club membership requirements for this event. The clubs are expecting to see some big baskets brought to the scales as the fishing in the central basin is starting to pick up. We should see a lot of fish caught as the fishing on Lake Erie so far this year has been nothing short of phenomenal and there is no reason to think this great bite wont continue as the fish migrate towards Geneva and points to the east commented Marc Hudson, President of the WBSA. He continued Last year it took over 40 lbs to win the event and we should see a lot of big fish this year also. As the naming sponsor of this event Gander Mountain will be present at the morning registration providing coffee and donuts for the anglers. At the weigh in Cal Agor from the Mentor store will award the Gander Mountain Early Bird Award to the WBSA team that won the distinction earlier this year. The teams will take off at 7 AM and have to be back in by 4 PM to weigh their fish. Spectators are encouraged to attend the weigh in and can expect to hear exactly how and where the teams caught their fish. This is a great opportunity for people to get their first taste of tournament fishing and also to learn new ways and techniques to help them put more fish in the boat added Ron Bradway, President of the WRWA. Complete rules and details along with online registration can be found at www.wbsa.us To avoid the $50 late fee teams need to be entered by Wednesday July 5th at 8 PM. If the teams wish to donate their fish the Fairport Harbor Rod and Reel Club will be accepting them to go towards their senior citizen fish fry. They will also be supplying food and drinks for the anglers at the weigh in.
