  1. Warnke and Kerscher pull off Gander Mountain Migration Open Win

The Western Reserve Walleye Association (WRWA) and the Western Basin Sportfishing Association (WBSA) held the second annual Gander Mountain Migration Open Walleye Tournament on July 7th out of Geneva State Park on Lake Erie. An almost full field of 58 teams had beautiful weather and great fishing for this rapidly growing event.

The team of Darik Warnke and Matt Kerscher, both of Stow, pulled out the win with a total weight of 34.34 lbs for 5 walleye. They caught their winning basket between Geneva and Fairport in 64 foot of water pulling Reef Runners 150’ back. Warnke explained their presentation as “boring” compared to what some other teams were running and said all their fish came before noon and prism colors were the key. Mike Miller of Lakewood and Jason Kopf of Avon Lake brought in 32.26 lbs to take second place. Finishing out the top 5 were Gary and Nicholas Zart of Hinckly with 30.98 lbs good for third, Kevin Michnicki and Frank Zubel of North Royalton finished fourth with 29 lbs. and Scott Schultz of Geneva and Dennis Caserta of Madison finished fifth with 28.02 lbs.

The teams used a variety of techniques from the winners “boring” program to wire line, dipsy’s, leadcore and snap weights. Lures of choice were also greatly varied as spoons, harnesses and cranks all caught fish. Some teams talked about the angle they trolled being the key to catching bigger fish.

In the chase for the big walleye award Warnke and Kerscher took top honors there also with a 9.48 lb fish. Team Zart was right behind them with Steve Carlson of Huron and Steve Pochatek of Strongsville finishing in third for big walleye. Winning the top place in the big steelhead competition was Randy Cline of Nova and Mike Petruska of Cleveland with a 8.06 lb steelhead.

Cal Agor from the Mentor Gander Mountain store was on site in the morning and provided coffee and donuts for the teams prior to take off. Agor also presented the Gander Mountain Early Bird Award to the WBSA team of Cline and Chicoine during the weigh in. This award was won earlier in the year by the team. The Fairport Harbor Rod and Reel club were on site taking fish donations for their senior citizens fish fry and provided food and beverages for the anglers after their long day on the water.

In the LEWT team of the year race the rookie team of Michnicki and Zubel moved back in the lead in what is still a wide open race. There are 9 teams that are still in the running to take the top stop after the last tournament in September.

For more information about the clubs visit or There are still spots open for the remaining events for both clubs. In addition to Gander Mountain as naming sponsor for this tournament Starcraft Marine and Evinrude E-Tec are title sponsors for the WBSA Lake Erie Walleye Trail.
