I have an old Johnson 5.5 that is a great running little motor. I don't use it much because I have a 25 horse. I put it on the boat and noticed it is leaking oil (not attached to the fuel line).

There is a small panel with 4 little holes in it just below the lower unit top plug. The oil seems to be leaking from around that panel. slow leak, but enough to warrant a repair. The panel is held on by 2 bolts. The lower unit oil is clean. I added a little.

My questions are: What is the little panel? Can I pop it out and replace a gasket?

i will take a look at a 5.5 parts motor and make sure of where you are talking about the oil leaking ! but if it was a bad seal prop shaft-driveshaft or shiftrod o-ring you would have water in the lower unit ! or bad fill and drain seals you would have water in the lower unit. i am wondering if it is exhaust oil you are seeing !
