My daughter and I made our first trip of the summer over to alum to put some of the shad we caught in Galena to the test. I put hers on a bobber, mine on bottom. She caught 3 fish.... me none! Good start to summer! Last day of school today.
It's funny how a little sass is cute at 8 but unbearable at 13. Haha. Will catfish commonly come up for bait or was this just a freak occurrence? I'm usually bottom fishing but there has to be something in that she caught 3 fish and me none. May be the fact the bait is moving / covering more water? Maybe just dumb luck. Anyway, gonna grab some big bobber and find out!
They will definitely come up and take a bait. I’ve caught numerous ones on topwater, mostly after dark. All in all it looks like a good day on the water!
Last week we caught a couple dozen channel cats and about 10 blues out of the north end of Hoover. Every fish was caught drifting cut shad and live creek chubs under a bobber. The channel cats were tight to cover, but the blues were in 12-15 ft of water and coming up to hit baits only about a 3-4 ft down from a bobber. Heading back out tomorrow to see if the pattern has stayed the same.
Nice, catching one of the blues us on my wish list this summer. Gonna drift in the kayak with cut shad. Is them coming up so far only a spring thing or a common occurrence. I feel dumb for only bottom fishing for cats now! Been catfishung since i was a kud, but i guess uve been a creature of habit haha, I only just got a cast net and started using shad last year.
It's a spring pattern right now, but with these warm temps and warm rains it won't last long. They'll move out to deeper water soon.
