Went to Alum tonight after work for my first Saugeye trip. Water was much more stained than I anticipated and was 78-80 degrees where we fished in the south pool. Tried a couple spots in the middle pool but it was too stained for my liking. Was using a Green/White 1/8oz Mooneye jig with 2.75” Solar Flare Joshy tipped with a piece of crawler. Was able to pull a 3 man ticket in about 3 hours. Only had 3 undersized fish. Largest was around 19.5” and they were all about 16” average. All fish came in 2-6’ of water and had 3 actually breach water bringing the jig up out of the water! Fun few hours of fishing! Kept two eyes for my buddies new pond and 7 pumpkin seeds. All others released.

Never fished for saugeye before, live in NE Ohio, fish Berlin Lake and catch walleye, grandsons live in Sunbury, bringing my boat down to try for some saugeye. Looks similar to how I walleye fish, jig& crawler.Usually look for points, humps, drop offs,is that what you fish for saugeye too. Any advice would be appreciated.

First off, Troy (Fishslim) and many others have a GREAT thread at the top as a sticky with TONS of wisdom.

That being said, this time of year is my favorite time to saugeye fish. Fish can be found in the backs of wind blown coves, fan casting points or rocky areas. I enjoy the science of trolling but prefer the finesse of casting every chance I get. This time of year (like last night) I caught a lot of them just like crappie fishing, just a foot off bank. All of these fish (roughly 21-22) came in a 150 yard stretch. I couldn’t locate them in my other productive areas so I would switch colors or cadence to trigger strikes back at this area. I keep the boat back as far as I can and cast because often those fish are chasing bait OFF the banks. My theory (and others way more knowledgeable can chime in) is that most fish have spawned ie Crappie, gills are on beds and shad are heavily schooling with plankton rich areas where warm water temps are causing growth. This makes it extremely easy for saugeye to feed. There are MILLIONS of susceptible fry that have hatched and make it easy for these marrauding predators to feed. They are simply land locked to the bait. I really don’t even prefer open water fishing yet. Just my thoughts.

exactly the case the saugeyes are not stupid they use what the surroundings give them to make eating as easy as possible. i have literally seen saugeye run shad or gills or shore minnows right onto the shore and grab them out of the water. They have as said so many tasry treats this time of year shallow due to spawn going on that they just stay near these areas and eat at will.
