Spent the week camping at the Ohio state park and fishing for walleyes. This was the second time on that lake as my friend just got a new boat with a 20hp. Normally we hit Mosquito this time of year camping for the week but have been wanting to get back on Pymatuning.
It started off slow the first two days Sunday and Monday and we really don't know the lake.
Fished the south end down by the beach and other shallows with a couple of small ones in the boat. Went up to the north end Monday and fished a few shallow areas where we could find weed growth and had a couple of small ones but legal size in the boat.
Checked the radar and saw what was coming and we beat feet back south but still got caught in the downpour on the way back. Even with rainsuits we were soaked. State parks have washers and dryers so we were able to dry out our jackets, cloths and shoes.
Later that evening I walked around and looked at the other boats that were tied up and how the poles were rigged and with what. Also spoke to a few baitshops that did not have 16 yo girls working that could offer some info.
Seems like worm harnesses were the tickets so I bought a few.

Pymatuning is very similar to Mosquito but also quite different at the same time. Much less weeds growth and lots and lots of stumps, heavy wood and other snags on the bottom.
I lost both worm harnesses I bought on the bottom snags as the mono they were tied with was either cheap, low lb test or both. Luckily I brought a few packs of my Eagle Claw snelled worm spinners that I used to catch limits of saugeyes on at Nimisila.
Those guys were the ticket. I out produced my friend as he wouldn't switch from jigs and crawlers to the lightly weighted spinners. I must have caught 20-25 fish on Thursday to his 1 or 2.
The perch are nice size at Pymatuning compared to Mosquito. We caught a bunch of those 7-9"ers and a few up to11". A nice smallmouth, and quite a few channels, gills and redears.
Those channels looked real clean and eatable but we didn't keep any.

Lake temp was 61-62 on Sunday and 70-71 by Thursday. Walleyes are in the shallows 5-9 fow We caught a few in 2 fow. We can catch a lot of walleyes at Mosquito on jigs but the Pyma walleyes seem to need some flash to get their attention.

Thanks for the nice report! I have fished the lake for over 20 years. I enjoy catching all species there. I’ve always done well jigging over the side. Keep it no more than 6 in from the bottom.
I’ve had the Erie bug for 4 years but I always enjoy going back to pyma.
Probably heading up there tomorrow.

Here's the Eagle Claw crawler spinners. I haven't used these in years since they quit stocking saugeyes in Nimisila. I still had about 5 packs in the boat. I going to try them again at Nimi and West Branch and see how they do. Only need about an inch of crawler.
A small bullet weight and then a bead on top of a ball bearing swivel and you're good to go. A good swivel is a must or your line will be terribly twisted.
