Hit alum today again in the kayak with a friend from 2-630. the main goal was saugeye with crappie as a back up plan. On are way to are saugeye spots i wanted to see if the crappie where still where i left em last saterday.they are. Half hour with a pink 1/16 oz road runner an a peartruce twister put 6/7 keeper sized fish in the kayak. Laydowns under shade trees.
Paddled to a flat with nothing going on,back of a cove nothing, another flat,a bass an a big gill. No saugeyes for me at all. So we head back to the crappie spots an i put another 15/20 crappiez in the kayak on the same jig. Only one crappie was dark in color. Looked to be a few spawned out females as well. I also hit more dinks this trip as well. An the deeper part of the laydownd had mors fish....
All middle section in water no deeper then 8'.....
Not what i wanted, but a blast having them thump a jig after dipping with a float all spring....
Super busy this week with my oldest stepson graduating and the party on Saturday but after that I am going to be putting in some time on the water. Maybe we can hook up at Alum sometime.
Do you ever do any trolling from your kayak? I started trolling last year with some limited success. I was also at alum in the kayak from 8-4. I found the crappie bite tough today. Most of my hot spots were not producing much. I caught about a dozen crappie, all small except for one 13 inch, two bass trolling a crankbait. Tuesday I caught a bass and two nice size catfish trolling a crankbait. Surprised me because I did not think a catfish would hit a trolling crankbait.
Catfish will absolutely eat a trolled crankbait. A few years ago, when I still had my boat, I was trolling with crappie cranks at Alum and caught a channel that went over 10lbs. That same day we caught 4 doing the same thing looking for crappie trolling crankbaits. I haven't trolled much in my kayak but think it will produce fine.
We found some eyes yesterday evening on main lake points in middle pool. Mostly shorts tho. Looking back now we should have spent the whole trip working points for eyes cause the crappie spots we checked were not holding many fish like a week ago.
Any hot baits? I tossed everything i had tipped with meat an no meat.
Although bye the time we got on the crappie again the wind switched an sun hid behind some clouds i told my friend i bet if we go back to are points we would hit a few eyes before dark, but didnt feel like paddling back an the crappiez where almost non stop at this time.... maybe next week....
2 of us trolled middle pool yesterday 7am-11:30. Stayed 10 feet or less. Only caught cats and a few crappie until around 10 am. Bite really picked up after 10, caught 5 or 6 eyes, all shorts, also caught a pig smallie 18" but she was loaded eggs id guess 5 pounds plus with the eggs. Wish we didn't have to leave. Lost a few nice ones also. White bomber was on fire.
Caught few smallies and of all things a saugeye back in a cove... waiting on supper then might head out for hour or so..
