After years of donating my cash, my son finally hit the jackpot. I know it's the proverbial fish in a barrel, but anyone with experience have any secrets they're willing to share? Also, since his day is at the end of June, I think I might try spend a couple days and see if we can jump on the lake with a charter/headboat. Any advise on who to go with/avoid?
I've heard that the best thing you can do is try not to catch the small trout. If you catch 'em, you need to keep them. Might try pinching down the barbs on your hooks.
Congrats! One day, maybe, I'll win.
Those fish will hit anything. Just use a jig that way if a small fish tries to eat it you can pull it out of the water before it does. A spinner or crankbait is difficult to get out of the water in time. All fish caught must be kept. Fish worms and you will be done in 10 minutes.
Been there 3 times. Pinch barbs down on hooks, use a small stone fly under a flat, and don't use any live bait. If you do that you can stretch your fishing time to 2.5 hours depending on how many kids you bring. Older kids learn to let the small ones run and they will shake off.
If you don't follow the above you could be done in 15 minutes. Once the fish is on the bank or in your hand you must keep it.
Take a picnic breakfast or lunch and take a "half way" break to slow things down.
By following the above we have managed 2.5 to 2.75 hours fishing time before limiting and minimized fish under 16" with plenty over 20".
I used large gap bass hooks with 5" bass assassin plastics so that the kids would only catch the big ones and when rigged it was safe for them to cast because the hook wasn't exposed. The cooler was full after about 22 fish so I had to shut them down. No C and R. Was a blast.
They truly will hit anything! We got our first one of the day years ago on the first cast with a 3 inch jointed yellow Jitterbug in bright sunshine--just trying to see if what we heard was true. Good advice from the previous guys--crimp down your barbs on single hook lures and you'll have a better time.
I won it last year and it was awesome! I took my fly rod, thank goodness. It was easier to hunt the bigger ones and pull the fly away from the smaller guys. Anything works too so thats not the problem. Being fast enough to yank the fly away from so many willing biters is a challenge!
